As I prepare to guide breath-based work in the Breathing as One ProgrammeI find myself returning to this question again and again:
Who am I to guide your breath?
Breath has been at the centre of my work for as long as I can remember, and I am personally committed to its lifelong study.
At 36, I experience my first lung collapse. Before fully recovering, I experience another, and then another. Eventually, I stop counting.
Each pneumothorax offers a new opportunity to attune to the rhythm and cycle of breath.
With each lung collapse, I am reminded: I am breathing.
This experience teaches me, time and time again, that breath is the constant continuum of life – not something to be controlled or optimised, but something to be met.
I have spent two decades studying anatomy, fascia, movement and breath, accumulating years of academic and clinical experience.
And yet, I do not believe that credentials alone qualify anyone as a guide.
What matters more to me is the capacity to hold space, time and attention – to listen, to respond, and to remain in relationship with what is unfolding.
This is the orientation from which I meet breath: not as a technique, but as an ongoing dialogue; not as an outcome, but as a living process that shapes how we inhabit ourselves.
This question –who am I to guide you? – does not seek a definitive answer.
It keeps me attuned.
It keeps me listening.
It keeps the work alive.
You might find yourself on a similar path – curious about breath not as something to master, but as a portal for self-witnessing; an opportunity to self-guide towards regulation and to cultivate resilience.
I would love to hear about your own path with breath in the comments below.
Breathing As One (BAO) programme opens once a year, offering a guided exploration of fascia and breath: one that supporting regulation, homeostasis, greater capacity for resilience through fascial focused practices and a deeper sense of presence in everyday life.
If you’d like to be informed when BAO opens again, please join the waiting list. You can find out more about BAO here:
